Case study

Mercedes-Benz Nextgen RSE

Overview

The prototype concept was very well received by several customers including Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. Following further discussions, Mercedes-Benz nominated Centurion to develop the next generation of RSE for their G-wagon vehicle line.

A major challenge to overcome with this development was creating an RSE solution that though based on an android platform, was not seen to be another android tablet which could easily be compared against mainstream consumer electronics. In order to mitigate the risk of this, Centurion developed the solution in conjunction with Mercedes, with Mercedes defining their own brand prerequisites for the product including:

  • Use of Mercedes-Benz style HMI, working with Mercedes-Benz directed 3rd party
  • Integrating Mercedes existing designed “vehicle integration” feature
  • Adopting Mercedes design/style philosophy for the tablet
  • Integrating BT remote control in addition to BT audio

The HMI development was a very challenging area of the development, it was an evolutionary process working with Mercedes nominated styling partner to ensure colour, icon style, icon size, customer interaction fulfilled the expectations of “the Mercedes experience”.

This core development for Centurion included development of new hardware, software, bespoke HMI, mechanical design, styling and electrical interfaces.

As part of the technology evolution process, Centurion developed a new RSE platform to replace the very successful Centurion DVD based product range. The new solution offered access to more media sources and was in line with the changing way in which consumers accessed their media.
