Case study

Volvo Headrest Dock

Overview

To be able to fulfil the exacting expectations of this design, required several major considerations A-surface requirements, packaging, cable routing, crash and head impact performanceThe restrictions in package space to not only integrate the core docking station elements and electronics for charging in a design for assembly required a very creative approach to design.

Some prerequisites defined for the product –

  • Developing a solution that matches the performance of existing linefit solutions
  • Engineering a solution that fulfilled Volvos unique styling,
  • Provide the ability to charge a tablet product
  • Develop a bespoke vinyl wrapping solution
  • Meet vehicle safety requirements, Volvo’s own and those required for homologation

To create the final cosmetic surface necessitated in the development of a bespoke manufacturing process, whereby the injection moulded components are finished with a vinyl wrap. Multiple automated process steps were required including a controlled adhesive application as well as the use of an IR bladder press.

This solution was developed so it can be installed both on the production line and as a genuine accessory. This solution was initially fitted to the exclusive Volvo XC90 excellence vehicle, before migrating across the Volvo range of cars.

Centurion developed two variants of the dock in Headrest as well as being able to offer different colour finishes to match vehicle interiors.

Following the successful programme with Volvo, whereby Volvo used Centurions’ docking station solution across its entire vehicle range, Volvo wanted to be able to offer their customers a more integrated solution, in line with being seen as a premium brandOn this basis Volvo asked Centurion to integrate Centurions’ patented docking station into a new headrest design.
